A little turn back the clock, to my early collecting days. As a former primatology/primate conservation student, I am always drawn to artworks that feature monkeys and apes. French artist Dran, has featured primates in several of his pieces. I'm a big fan of the hand-finished 'Exhibit' print, as well as the macaque with 'Human Sucks' spray painted in the background. I contacted Dran about seven years ago, inquiring to see if 'Human Sucks' would ever be made into a print. We had a back and forth, before he offered to make something and send it my way. This was unexpected, but insanely appreciated. A few weeks later, Dran contacted me and was essentially yelling at me about this piece of art. My dog had just passed away and I must have mentioned something about it, as he called me from France and began yelling at me about it. From my limited Canadian french, I believe he thought I was trying to elicit free artwork, which was not the case. I offered to pay for anything he made or pay for a copy of the 'Human Sucks' print, should he ever create it.
Not every interaction with an artist is going to be perfect. Sometimes $h!t happens. I've only had three negative experiences with artists and I still follow two of them. Here are a few of my favorite pieces from Dran.
