There are many benefits to posting your artwork online and on social media. However, what happens when your art is jacked by another person? I've observed posts from Michael Reeder and Alex Garant, among others, who put up posts asking artists to focus on creating their own style, rather than jacking theirs. Today, one of my friends, Mr. Everybody, had his work jacked. Thankfully, he posted his reference photo and artwork on Instagram, which is date stamped. In the words of Michael Reeder, "I am by no means trying to discourage any of the awesome younger artists that utilize my work as inspiration for their own. A study is a study until it's not." I hope we aren't getting to the point where artists need to watermark their images. As a community, I think we need to name and shame when artists blatantly steal or copy work. Just my $0.02.
Art isn't purchased at big-box stores. This blog is for collectors like me, who collect on a budget.
